Grading Matters

Gradings at ASK are conducted by an authorized grading panel led by Chief Examiner Shihan Philip Lee (7th Dan). All grades are registered with ASK, while all Yudanshas (Black belt dan grades) are registered with Aikido World Headquarters (Aikikai Foundation – Tokyo, Japan) and the International Aikido Federation (IAF).

Grading Pre-requisites

Applicants must ensure that all pre-requisites have been fulfilled at time of Grading submission, and must be accompanied with the following:

  • Proof of training session and time period
  • Membership book (current membership must be paid)
  • Grading fees
  • Grading form (Parent’s signature required for all minors)

An additional administrative fee of $20 will be charged for any late submission after the deadline.

Grading Syllabus

For those in Children classes, age 5-12 years old*:

Children will have to transfer to an Adult class once they reach 13 years old (by year), and they will go for Adult Grading.

Intermediate grades that may be awarded by the Grading Panel upon their assessment. Adults who obtained Intermediate grades may grade again at the next available grading.
Ladies may wear a blue Hakama after obtaining 6th Kyu & black Hakama after 2nd Kyu.
Junior Dan is open for teenagers age 14 and below only. Junior dan holders can wear a blue Hakama.

With international certification from Aikido World Headquarters, Japan:

Minimum age is 15 years old to be eligible for 1st Dan Grading. Men can wear a black Hakama upon obtaining 1st Dan.
Minimum age is 26 years old to be eligible for 4th Dan Grading.

All Dan grades are strictly by recommendation from the Chief Instructor and/or Principal Dojo Instructor only & subject to SGADC approval.
